How often should I resurface my swimming pool?

The answer to this is, "It Depends." A properly cared for and maintained pool water chemistry can prolong the life of your pool finish. Homeowners and commercial property owners often keep their pool surfaces well beyond when they should resurface.

Signs that it is time to resurface are when your plaster is peeling, flaking, cracking, rough to the touch, discolored, develops deep structural cracks, rust stains appear, paint peels off, or the fiberglass fibers start to wear off.

Assuming your contractor used quality materials and proper surface preparation and installation methods, and the pool’s water chemistry has been well-maintained, the pool surface's lifespan in our area should be similar to the following:

  • White plaster: 5-10 years

  • White Quartz: 7+ years

  • Exposed pebble: 10 + years

  • Polished pool finishes: 5-10 years

The # 1 factor that impacts how long your resurface investment will last; most contractors never discuss it with pool owners.

When preparing to have a pool replastered, Homeowners should ask their contractor what method they will use to prepare the pool surface for adhering the new plaster.

Several methods exist for preparing the pool surface, however, not all methods create a sufficient anchor for the new plaster to adhere to and often fail within 1-3 years after replastering. Some of these methods also risk damaging the pool’s underlying structure if performed incorrectly.

These methods, unfortunately, are commonly used by contractors in our market, not because they create the best results, but because they cost less to perform and, oftentimes, homeowners are not informed about different surface preparation methods and how each affects the longevity of their pool plaster investment. Even worse, material bonding is not covered under the plaster manufacturer’s lengthy material warranties. Contractors often are quick to discuss the material warranty with pool owners, however they do not discuss and usually do not warrant how long the material will stay bonded to the pool surface.

Classic Pool Plastering utilizes the leading method for pool surface preparation, Ultra-High Pressure (UHP) Water Blasting. UHP Water Blasting uses water blasted up to 40,000 PSI to remove the existing plaster and create a superior anchor profile for the new plaster to adhere to. Classic has made a significant investment in UHP equipment and education for its team to be able to provide our customers with the most advanced, proven resurfacing process in the pool industry. Classic Pool Plastering backs its quality workmanship with the best material bond guarantee in the areas it serves.
